BBQ / Crit

On Sunday all the students met up for the bbq / critique of work we had done for the San Francisco trip. Everyone's work was outstanding as usual. I got some really great feedback. Murray Tinkelman, the director of our MFA program and Bill Thomson, my thesis advisor said my piece was a breakthrough piece! We all walked away feeling good about the work that had been produced and ready for week 2 of classes!

Field Trip

Saturday was Museum Field Trip Day. We visited the Norman Rockwell Museum and the Clark Museum in Massachusetts.

This painting is one of my favorites of Rockwell's. It's a painting of Herb Lubalin redesigning the masthead for the Saturday Evening Post and was used for the cover to introduce the new logo in 1961. The new logo was to give the Post a modern new look because the introduction of the television had driven magazine sales down around that time.

The Clark Museum had some great piece and when I saw this Gaugin portrait, I couldn't help but think that the 'Young Christian Girl' (1964) looks just like Jennifer Coolidge from some of my favorite movies; A Might Wind and Best in Show...

Gary Kelley & C.F. Payne

Just finished my first week of classes up at Hartford. We had 2 amazing Illustrators as professors, Gary Kelley and C.F. Payne. We were able to view demos of their techniques, and learn about their successful careers and the evolution of their art. A great first week!

Portrait of a Runner

Here's an illustration of my friend Gabby that I did to begin my thesis project, 'Portraits of Marathon Runners'. I am running the NYC Marathon this year for the first time and am halfway through school.
With marathon training and thesis study paralleling one another, it only made sense
to combine these 2 loves : drawing and running.
